Do they? I found a site that says S. Africa and France share the Type C plug. The other plug types for S. Africa look compatible with Type C plugs, though they add a 3rd pin for ground/earth.
@cassie or @Ali can you help here? I’m also wondering whether we need additional surge protection given the power infrastructure issues.
This might be a bit personal, but what kind of clothing do you guys pack for these conferences? I know that the conference has a business casual setting, but I’m also thinking about packing comfy clothes, some for trekking, and some for the beach. But should I also pack something slightly more elegant?
The conferences are pretty casual – lots of people wear company / conference t-shirts and jeans or casual slacks. (OpenCraft has a t-shirt too – has anyone organized t-shirts for the new folks?)
I usually bring some slightly nicer clothes for the mid-conference reception party and our team dinner, but that’s optional – I just get tired of wearing t-shirts all the time
Correct. Type C plugs are widely used here. Type M too.
I’ve never seen a type N, nor a type D here (although the internet says SA has type N).
This pharmacy chain sells plugs and adaptors, and is right around the corner from the University.
This is probably a good idea… although, I have been working for the last 8 months without one (just because I keep forgetting to buy one), and have been fine. Not that that’s a good approach!
Thank you @jill ! Somehow, I missed that the Europeans can use their plugs. And I think it was @Ali who suggested we ask our AirBnB host about surge protection (I don’t think our Stellenbosch place has it.
@DouglasDraper I recommended asking about backup power, not surge protection . I wouldn’t think Airbnb’s have surge protectors (although I may be wrong).
Haha, yes! One is for providing uninterrupted power when municipal power is out (e.g. solar, inverters), and one is to protect your appliances when there is a power surge (don’t quote me though; I’m no electrician).
Airbnb hosts have started sending chats to prepare for your arrival. A lot of them seem to be sharing important bits of information. Please pay attention to your emails, and let me know if you need any help! Enjoy your trip
Please could you add your names to the conference volunteer spreadsheet by the end of the today. OpenCraft is an “in-kind sponsor” at the 2024 Open edX Conference so every one of us needs to get involved
Hi @Ali Hugo and @Cassie Zamparini A couple of questions about schedules and volunteering: 1) Ali, thanks for being room mgr for the BizDev session on Tuesday. The hours say 1:30 to 3:30. The session is actually 180 minutes. Is there an error in the schedule? 2) Cassie, when is your talk with Ali? I want to attend (shill duties + I’m interested) but need to know what time so a) I can attend and b) so I don’t volunteer for another session that conflicts with your session.
Thanks and see you both soon!
Doug
Ali, thanks for being room mgr for the BizDev session on Tuesday. The hours say 1:30 to 3:30. The session is actually 180 minutes. Is there an error in the schedule? If you look at the schedule here, you’ll also see the talk is divided into two parts that equal 180 minutes :) Part 1 starts at 13:30 and Part 2 at 16:00.
Cassie, when is your talk with Ali? I want to attend (shill duties + I’m interested) but need to know what time so a) I can attend and b) so I don’t volunteer for another session that conflicts with your session. Ali and I will be talking during the lightning talk session starting at 15:30 on Thursday the 4th July.
I’ve added individual tickets to the Conference epic for everyone attending the conference next week. Note, there’s 12 hours timeboxed for conference attendance, this includes:
Attending the 2024 Open edX Conference in Stellenbosch
Volunteering at the 2024 Open edX Conference in Stellenbosch (up to 3 hours of the timeboxed 12 hours)
Hi Cassie,
Thank you for pointing out the discrepancy in the Tuesday event schedule and
letting me know about your Thursday at 3:30 on my nation’s birthday!
Hasta luego!
Doug
