Falcon capacity and replacing Jill

Hey Falcon,

With @jill’s departure, I wanted to check in with your cell about capacity for the summer and potentially replacing her with another developer.

We’re just wrapping our current project and about to start a new project with a budget of 700-800 hours. For that client, we’ve been doing around 450 hours/month (of which Jill has been about 50 hr/month). So basically if everyone is continuing to work around the same capacity as over the past 4 months, this project would use up the cell’s capacity for two months - July and August (800 hours divided by 400 hours = 2 months). Which I think is fine, timeline-wise.

But I know it’s summer, so if a couple people are planning to take significant time off, that could affect things.

As it happens, @Fox is looking for a new project and would be happy to join Falcon as Jill is leaving. Obviously he’s very experienced, including with React, so would be great to have working on these type of projects. He’d have more availability than Jill had lately, so having him join would somewhat increase Falcon’s capacity, which could be good or bad depending on various factors - like how soon we can get the following projects in place, how much other (e.g. Core Contributor) work people are doing, how much time off people are taking, etc.

So:

  • what are your plans for the summer in terms of time off, and
  • do you think it makes sense for Fox to join the Falcon cell?

Let me know if you prefer to make this thread private btw.

I don’t plan any significant change in my capacity for the summer

I agree that @Fox to join Falcon. But I have some questions:

  • @Fox, how much would your capacity be?
  • @braden, after Epic 14, is there any other epic planned?

I don’t have any planned time off until late November.

I would love to have @Fox on the team! The only concern is whether we have enough work to fill our capacity. My feeling is that we were at full capacity (in a good way) near Teak release, but things got much lighter after that.

However, if Fox is having trouble filling his hours, it makes total sense to have him work with Falcon and distribute the workload we have.

Even I don’t have any planned time off.

Having worked with @Fox in Listaflow, I know what he is capable of and would love to work with him again. However, like @rpenido and @ChrisChV mentioned above, I am not sure if we will be able to fill our and Fox’s capacity completely.

My expected capacity would be 20h/week to start. I would want to ramp up a bit over a few months to get closer to 35 or so, but that is not immediate.

Note that I do still have some small amount of work from other epics that as far as I know would be coming with me (Listaflow, Developer Advocacy) so they could pad some of the remainder, and I do still get called in occasionally for consult on BizDevvy stuff.

Edit: Originally said per month, but meant per week.

@Fox Just 20 hours per month? That’s not a lot. Did you mean per week? If it’s really just 20h per month, I think it’s not going to affect Falcon’s capacity too much.

Yes, sorry-- per week!

I don’t have any plans for summer besides two weeks after the conference.

To me it seems reasonable since he’s capable and we’ll be missing jill.
