Open edX Conference 2025 & Coworking Week

@Fox I’m not expecting anything that drastic. We have an entire week before the conference so worst case I’ll book the next flight and arrive a day or so late. I don’t want to already cancel this flight and book another because the cancellation charges are quite high.

This is a public thread, so more details in my private post.

Due to an urgent family issue, I have to cancel my plans for the conference and hand my talk over to Fox. I won’t be able to attend this year. Hope to see you all next year!

Poll: Team Dinner in Normandy

Hi all,

We’ll be hosting a team dinner later this week at Chateau Coliving, and need to plan for it. Sorry for doing this at the last minute!

Seafood is a major specialty in Normandy. But first, is someone allergic? Do people actually eat it? What are your dietary restrictions?

  • I’M ALLERGIC TO SEAFOOD
  • I will eat seafood
  • Not vegetarian, but I don’t eat seafood
  • I’m vegetarian
  • I’m vegan

Katia shared the following:

Seafood platters—Normandy Specialty! You can order (or we can order for you) big seafood platters directly from the fishermen - it is kind of THE thing in Normandie - they do these impressive plateaux with oysters, crabs, shrimps etc. for a fraction of the price of what a catering company would charge. Then on your side you just have to buy bread, butter, some salad and a cake or something for dessert. It’s not a fully catered meal but very easy to organise for so many people and unless you have many people who don’t eat shellfish could be a great option. The one we recommend the most is this poissonnerie.

Another option is to use Super U catering service, you just have to call to order and pick it up. It’s good quality and works well for cocktail dinatoire (charcuterie platters, small bites, etc.) style.

This rotisserie can also come on spot although we haven’t tried it yet.

I had a chat with Xavier about it - our dining room can fit up to 25, 32 would not be possible I’m afraid. So in this case the options would be - outdoors or in the workspace for a dinner like that on spot.

Ordering seafood + some catering items at the supermarket sounds like a good plan. Once we know how many people eat seafood, we can evaluate quantities, menu items, etc.

Also when is the best time for this?

  • Thursday
  • Friday
  • Saturday

I excluded Sunday, since most shops are closed on Sundays.

Thanks for organising this Gabriel! It sounds amazing  I have voted for Thursday mainly because I think we had a loose plan to go to Mont Saint-Michel on Friday - to avoid the weekend crowds. I’ve asked Katia about this.

@gabriel I think there will be a few people not eating the seafood platters – imho for the dinner it could be good to have a full catering service, to have them take care of everything (setup, cleaning, etc.), basically like we would have at a restaurant.

The seafood platters could be a good option for another evening, maybe via Splitwise just amongst those who will eat it? Katia told me it’s a really good deal compared to what we would get in a restaurant, so it could still be a good thing to do. I would be in ;p

Also beware I think we might already be a bit late to order the catering service, so I would do so now without waiting for everyone to answer the poll.

I generally don’t eat seafood, I’m open to trying things like shrimps and crab. I voted “Not vegetarian, but I don’t eat seafood”, because it would be great to have some meat options, to avoid a scenario where I end up being hungry.

Sounds good. Katia gave me a few suggestions, so I’ll call them right away.

@jill +1 :slight_smile:

@gabriel Would you be able to look into this, once everything is OK for Saturday? I know it was stressful for the catering, so if you’re fed up with it I can call them (do you have the contact details?)

Hey @antoviaque, thanks for offering. It’s not so much that I’m fed up, but I think it would be better if you or someone else on-site coordinates with the fishmonger. If you’re planning to do this on Thursday (since people will be at Mont Saint Michel on Friday), it’s best to call them early, and it would be much easier if you’re in their timezone. This is the poissonnerie recommended by Katia. Their number is +33233520672. Thanks! :fish:

Alright, it’s now confirmed: team dinner will be held in the Chateau courtyard this Saturday, June 28, around 18h45. The caterer, Domaine Utah Beach, will serve a buffet-style meal with local specialties consisting of the following:

  • Fish rillette verrine and vegetables :fish: :cucumber:
  • Charcuterie board :bacon:
  • Local farmhouse beef slow-cooked in cider :meat_on_bone:
  • Local seafood platter or dish :shrimp: :crab:
  • Cold vegetarian platter :falafel:
  • Pilaf rice :rice:
  • Bread :bread:
  • Cheese board :cheese:
  • Dessert du jour :cake:

They’ve taken note of allergies.

The only thing left to figure out is drinks. You might already have what you need, but please make sure you’ve got beverages covered, since they’re not included in the meal. This way, everybody drinks what they want : )

If you want to drink local, find some cider at the caviste or grocery store. I would also highly recommend that someone buys a bottle of calvados (which is distilled from local cider) to honor the tradition of drinking a trou normand between courses as a palate cleanser :wine_glass:

Please don’t hesitate if you have any questions. Santé !

T-shirts have been delivered! @gabriel I assume this is your order? What should we do with those?

Thanks, @antoviaque. I’ll ping people who requested a t-shirt, and they can pick it up according to their order on the spreadsheet.

For the dinner, can a few people please volunteer to arrange tables and chairs in advance? The caterer should be at the Chateau around 6pm on Saturday. The caterer needs a long table or two for the buffet setup (I’ll confirm with them). Please coordinate this with Kevin, and let me know if you have any questions.

My T-shirt fits well and looks great! Thanks @gabriel :)

Yay, thanks @gabriel!

@antoviaque what’s the best way to collect them from you — should we just come knock on the flap of your tent? :camping::door:

Happy to help with this if we’re back from our e-biking adventures in time.

:joy:

Thank you for all the organising @gabriel!

Sure! I can help.

Ahahah, they are in the main room in the castle, by the fireplace - you can just collect it yourself directly in the box

@antoviaque I forgot to collect my shirt! Is it too late now?
