@Fox Both @tikr and I calculated the CC hours for the first six months of the year as >1300 hours ( [1][2] ), so it doesn’t seem right that the “CC Total” is now less than that a month later.
Also, your report shows my total for the year as being only ~40 hours, but it’s definitely more than that - my usual report shows 178h.
Could you check where those differences are coming from?
Also, is it possible to break this down further into billable vs. sponsored contributions, as we’ve been doing in the reports on MNG-2649 ?
Tickets without the CoreContributor label don’t get counted toward the total. A lot of the tickets linked in the report there aren’t tagged with that label. I’m assuming that, in most cases, they were missed when we did the tagging effort a few sprints back.
We use the label since not every ticket under the CoreContributor epic counts as hours toward our commitment, and not every ticket which is a contribution goes under the CoreContributor epic.
I’m going to go back and look through that report and see what I can tag that’s missing.
If there’s a clean demarkation of that in the data, we could. I’d have to look into it-- it wasn’t in the scope of the report I was originally asked to create, so I’d prefer to look into it after any other issues are addressed.
Oh, why? I totally missed that. I know we had the effort to tag “missed” contributions, which I did in e.g. MNG-4697, but I still assumed that either the Core Contributor epic or the CoreContributor tag would result in it being a contribution. For simplicity, I would much prefer if everything in the epic is counted. Does our overhead in administering the program not also count, for example? I also log a lot of general time like answering questions on the forum directly on the epic, and since it doesn’t have the label itself, all that time is missing from the report.
I’m unsure of this. A plain reading of the scope document seems to suggest not, except for activities that are organizing public elements of the program (such as any administrative work involved in planning the conference or working groups.) Company’s internal organization to meet their obligations does not appear to count as contributions in my reading, much like OpenCraft team member’s costs on accounting/tax preperation for their respective business entities isn’t billable.
Perhaps @antoviaque will have a different reading when he sees this-- preferring to wait for Axim to raise an issue about it rather than trying to assume it doesn’t apply (forgiveness rather than permission). Assuming I’m correct, though, this leaves a different issue-- if we need to somehow reorganize worklogs now, which could be a PITA from @tikr, @farhaan, or @gabriel 's perspective, as it would mean changing already-billed history. However we wouldn’t be changing the accounts-- we’d probably just need to create a ticket for offloading these worklogs onto.
For example, we currently have team members who have their own dedicated contributions ticket in the recurring column-- like this one for Navin. That, it would seem to me, should be given the CoreContributor label, and always count. For team members in Falcon, for instance, if they spend time doing things on the forum, they’d log it there. But they’d not have to worry about accidentally counting Axim-sponsored contributions, since CC work on Axim projects would be logged on those tickets, and any overhead organization should definitely be logged on the epic ticket.
@Fox OK well in any case, the overhead we spend managing the Core Contributor epic and our participation in it is tiny. I can always log such work (like this discussion) onto other tickets or create a “Core Contributor Admin” ticket if needed.
Can I go ahead and add the CoreContributor label to the Core Contributor epic itself (MNG-2649), and the few tickets in that epic that don’t have the label? They’re mostly old but they’re all things that should be counted. I’m assuming that will resolve most of the discrepancy between my reports and yours.
@braden I’ve gone through and retagged the old tickets. Jill’s also no longer a CC on our end so her hours are no longer counted as required. Here’s the revised output:

These numbers are much better and should closer match your expectations. Alongside the other in-progress recategorization work, I expect we will be way ahead on our obligations shortly.
@Fox@braden +1 for counting the epic and its tasks, I think @braden wouldn’t be the only one getting caught off guard by this. Technically a discussion about how to organize ourselves to contribute might not count as core contributor time, but imho it would be fair to argue that it could count, especially if it’s small as @braden mentioned. Keeping the accounting of hours simple and intuitive seem more important imho.
That might be a stretch, it’s not like you can contribute the report generation code to Open edX. If it’s easier to include it and not too many hours you can include it this time for simplicity, but if it’s easy to exclude it from the count or it would add a lot of time, I wouldn’t include it.
